A short concluding chapter, cut before publication, was later published in the August 1977 issue of Galaxy. Gateway was serialized in Galaxy prior to its hardcover publication. The novel was adapted into a computer game in 1992. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. Add in some inklings – threatening, stinking fishy kind of creatures – lurking in the dark and to be avoided at all costs, and we are well and truly in Murakami territory. Our narrator is a Calcutec – a human data processor – and his latest project sees him navigating a secret underground cavernous world at the centre of Tokyo, leading to the secret lab of an eccentric old man, aided by his granddaughter. Enter Murakami’s propensity for the slightly off-kilter reality. However, as is also often the case, our narrator is about to get himself embroiled in the most unusual of situations. He lives alone, he likes his beer, he whips up delectable snacks at the drop of a hat, he loves his jazz and his western culture. One part: a Tokyo muchly similar to contemporary Tokyo but with a cyber twist, where our narrator lives a life typical to all Murakami’s male narrators in their 30s or so. Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is a story of two parts and two worlds, a story that encapsulates two very different sides of Haruki Murakami’s writing. But I've been fascinated by the ways people occupy their racial and gender identities for a long time, probably since I was a boy. Why are conversations about these topics so important right now?Ī: Well I think the #MeToo movement is one big reason we're taking a close and necessarily critical look at masculinity these days. Q: The stories in your collection are wonderful explorations of identity and masculinity. I think the parts of my childhood that shows up in my writing are the reliance on imagination many of my characters possess, the longing for a broader world they have, and the love-hate relationship with being introspective and private. I did play basketball with my friends, go to their houses to play video games - stuff like that - but I recall being a homebody for the most part. The K-8 Catholic school I went to was close enough that my brother and I could easily walk there and back every day. Tell me about your childhood in New York - how does it influence your storytelling?Ī: I was raised in Brooklyn and, for several years, in the South Bronx. In advance of this event, which is free and open to the public, Brinkley spoke about his childhood in New York, his writing process, and why a solitary profession like writing still requires a community. The God versus evolution dialogues made both sides look ridiculous. At one point the exchange between father and son brought a tear to my eye.īut then, the rest of the book just grated on me. The interactions amongst the three of them were sweet and touching. Dr Jericho, although in his fifties, had an adopted son who was only 5 years old, and a wife of ten years. One of those aliens spends most of their time with Tom doing research on the history of earth’s species. The central conflict of the story consists of Tom and the alien, Hollis’, constant debates about the existence of a creator two extremely misguided bible thumping rednecks who are angry about abortion, evolution, and 70 million year old fossil preservation and Tom attempting to reconcile his family to his terminal lung cancer diagnosis.įor me, the only truly engaging part of the book was this last part. An alien ship has come to earth with several members of two different life forms that have already found one another. The story is told from the perspective of Dr Tom Jericho, a palaeontologist at Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum. I thought the book might offer me some interesting insights on one side of the debate or the other. I decided to have a go with Calculating God by Robert J Sawyer because the notion of an outsider coming into our society and attempting to prove God’s presence was intriguing to me.
